Making SEo disaster

Bookmark and Share

So you thought you could get away with some quick optimization for a low, low cost and you hired a man who seemed like he had a good resume (or perhaps you passed theSEO over to your Webmaster). Now the links aren’t rolling in and you want to know what you can do to fix it. Let’s discuss some of the usual suspects when it comes to SEO failure.

Restrict Your Outbound Links

This might seem like SEO 101 to most readers but it is incredible how many people still make this mistake. Restrict the number of outbound links and ads, both in number and by making them nofollow links. Your site should be a terminus, not a way station for your visitors. The type of content on your site is also very important so make sure you don’t have ads from disreputable sites.

Spread Your SEO Equally

Don’t make the mistake of fixating on Off-Site SEO. While having links flowing in and ranking high on Google is nice, this won’t help you as much as you think if your site is a mess and the Google spiders can’t make heads or tails of it. Equally don’t neglect Off-Site SEO by focusing on hyper-optimizing your site. If it’s well done but nobody can find it because it’s on the 18th page you are not going to be drawing in much traffic.

Don’t Be Generic

When starting your optimization process you need to set targets and selected keywords that you want to rank for. When selecting Google Ad Words you need to be very careful, as it will often decide how easy it is for people to find you to a larger degree than most of your other marketing tactics. You should really decide whether you want to compete for a very generic keyphrase or whether you want your parameters to be more specific and thus less expensive. You will not be able to get a good rank on ‘car dealership’ without a significant investment of resources whereas by adding your state or town you might be able to drastically improve your Return on Investment.

NO Blackhat

Google is really hard on underhanded SEO tactics and for good reasons. Keyword Spam, illicit link-building, inbound links from poor quality sites with little thought to content and worst of all, massive paid link campaigns upset our benevolent overlords at Google very much, enough for them to penalize and even drop the results entirely for some major brands. Don’t engage in black hat, it’s the surest way to get in big trouble.

So how do you fix an unmitigated disaster? Well, common wisdom says that prevention is better than cure so hiring a proper SEO marketing agency beforehand will likely prevent a disaster like this. If the disaster has already happened, good SEO might get you out of trouble at least partially. In any case, your best bet would be to put the whole mess in the hands of someone competent and wait till they fix it.
